Hathurusingha likely to return as Tigers head coach

DHAKA, Jan 31, 2023 (BSS)- Chadikar Hathurusingha looked all set to replace Russell Domingo as the head coach of Bangladesh after he left his post as assistant coach of New South Wales.

There was speculation that Hathurusingha who supervised Bangladesh national team as head coach from 2014-2017 could be brought back again as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), in the past, made it clear it wanted a stern and aggressive coach like Hathurusingha.

After Hathuru’s departure, both Steve Rhodes (2018 to 2019) and Domingo (2019 to 2022) were thought of as soft, something the cricket apex body time again made public.

BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon said on Monday that the new head coach would be appointed between February 18 and 20.

“The coach will come. I don’t if it is Hathuru or someone else, neither has the BCB announced it, but you will see,” Papon told the reporters in Sylhet.

“We want a full time coach but sadly most of the coaches wanted to work as day basis, which is not acceptable for us. However we got a full time coach and he will definitely be in place before the England series [starting March 1]. I won’t say who it will be. He will be here by February 18-20.”

Former Sri Lanka cricket Hathuru’s exit from New South Wales brought to an end his second stint with the county, as he had worked with them from 2011 to 2014 before his first engagement with Bangladesh.

“Chandi has made a wonderful contribution to Cricket NSW, the Blues and Sydney Thunder over the last couple of years and we are sad to see him go,” NSW’s head of male cricket Michael Klinger said in a statement.

“But with that in mind, we totally understand his desire to seek a coaching role internationally and we wish him all the best in the next chapter of his coaching career.”

Head coach Phil Jaques was sacked late last year, with Greg Shipperd, the Sydney Sixers coach, taking temporary charge until the end of the 2022-23 season. Hathurusingha’s role will be temporarily filled by Cameron White, who is also part of the Sixers set-up.

Meanwhile Hathurusingha is believed to take up the head coach role in Bangladesh men’s Test and ODI while Sridharan Sriram will continue to work as a technical consultant. Sriram worked temporarily as technical consultant with Bangladesh’s T20 team in last T20 World Cup. The players however were happy with his role and so as the BCB which said they want Sriram to continue.
