PM opens construction of Bangladesh’s first underground metro rail by RexoNews.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today inaugurated the construction of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line-1.

The country’s first underground metro line will have two parts — one from Dhaka airport to Kamalapur and the other from Notun Bazar to Purbachal.

The premier formally inaugurated the construction work of MRT Line-1 at Purbachal New Town Project at Narayanganj’s Rupganj.

She got on stage at 11:09am after inaugurating the construction work. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, local MPs, Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor, Japanese ambassador to Bangladesh among others, joined the premier on stage.

The Road Transport and Highways Division Secretary ABM Amin Ullah Nuri said following the inauguration the construction work of MRT Line-1 has formally started today and is expected to be completed within 2026.

A civil rally was also organised soon after.
